RANSOM ANDREW WOMAC(K)
RANSOM ANDREW WOMAC(K) - Born - 15 Nov 1841 Spring Town, Polk Co, Tn Died - 17 Oct 1915 Big Springs, Meigs Co, Tn Bur. - Oct 1915 Good Hope Cem, Meigs Co, Tn OCCUPATION: He was a farmer. MILITARY: Served in CSA in Civil War, record in file. MARRIAGE: first ca 1865 per WILL Book CC 89 McMinn Co Tn. MARRIAGE: second 19 May 1889. The son of James ALEXANDER Womack and Freelove Thompson. He died 17 Oct 1915, and buried at Good Hope Cemetery. My Aunt Viola Womack Pearson saw Ransom when he came to her father's funeral, John Huston Womack, in 1910, Cleveland, Bradley Co, TN. She discribed him as looking like her brother Jasper Asborn Womack, whom I knew as a child. He was about 5 foot 8 inces and weighed about 150 lbs. Had black hair that was straight and coarse. His face was lean and a very sharp nose. I think he had blue eyes where all the rest of the brothers and sisters had brown eyes. Aunt Viola said that Ransom had hitch hiked to Grandpa's fumeral, riding on the back of wagons. At the time he was living in Meigs Co, TN. and Grandpa died south of Cleveland, in Bradley Co. Tn. Ransom's first marriage was to Josephine Fox, b. ?? at this writing (1988). She was the daughter of Abraham Fox, Jr. and Caroline Dickey, believed to be of Polk County, TN. They were married by 25 Sep 1866. For on that date Josephine was named in her Grandfather Abraham Fox, Sr.'s, WILL, recorded in McMinn Co, TN, as wife of Ransom Womack. HER DEATH: probably Short Creek, McMinn Co., Tn. where they were living at that time. Unable to find grave, probably unmarked. No record of death. After 21 Oct 1883, her signature was on land Deed in McMinn Co., Tn. and before Ransom's second marriage, 19 May 1889. MARRIAGE: Date of marriage is unknown, before May 1871, date of birth of first born. Per WILL Book CC89 22 Sep 1866, McMinn Co, TN, WILL of Josephine's Grandfather, Abraham Fox, they were married at that time. OTHER: Josephine was not listed at home with her parents in 1860 census, Polk Co,TN. In 1870 census, 9th District McMinn Co, TN. she was listed as wife of Ransom, age 28 born TN. (same age and place of birth as Ransom). No children listed in this census. Ten years later they were in the same district, but by now they had four children. Per Deed Book U, 21 Oct 1883, pages 573-74 McMinn Co, TN. Josephine was still the wife of Ransom. She must have died by Oct 1888. Per Deed Book DD, pgs 70-71, McMinn Co, TN, Rena Wommack, Ransom's second wife's name was on said deed. Data sources; Roy Lee & Viola Womac, Rt 1 Box 203, Athens, TN 37303, phone 615-745-5287. Jimmy & Martha Womack, 6132 Bonny Oaks Dr, Chattanooga, TN 37416 (now living in Athens 1991). Mrs. Alfred Womack, Apt E, 833 Oscee St, Cleveland, TN 37311. He served in the Civil War, Company F of the 36th Tennessee Infantry, CSA. A Private, listed on card #50051251. He served in Capt Ivin B. Brock's Company of Volunteers; later becoming Company C. Ransom was 20 years of age when enlisting at Cleveland, Bradford Co, TN, January 12, 1962 for a period of 12 months. He mustered in on the 16th of June 1962. Some history of the Company: Capt. Ivin B. Brock's Company of Volunteers subsequently became Company F, 36th Regiment Tennessee Infantry. The 36th Regiment Tennessee Infantry was formed February 26, 1962, by the addition of three companies to the seven companies of Major W. A. Camp's Battalion Tennessee Infantry, which had been organized February 14, 1862. An attempt to re-organize the regiment was made in May, 1862, but it appears to have failed because most of the men deserted. Companies H, I and K were consolidated by order of Gen E. K. Smith, dated June 24, 1862, and formed Captain A. K. Alley's Independent Company, which was mustered as Company L of this regiment June 30, 1862. The balance of the regiment was disbanded and some of the men assigned to the 43rd and 63rd Regiments Tennessee Infantry. Captain Alley's Company (or Company L) appears to have been attached to the 35th Regiment Tennessee Infantry and it was mustered as Company L of that organization August 22, 1862. McMinn Co., Tn.
